Actor Eduardo Noriega plays a fantastic dual role as twin brothers, one a policeman the other mentaly disturbed, who fall in love with the same prostitute. Flora Martines as always is beautiful and plays an excelent roll as the twin brothers lover. Very entertaining.

The main character is one of those weird European Communist/modern artist types (Stalin, of course,being a great appreciator of modern art). He has a wife who is very much and very dangerously insane (she drinks out of the toilet and at one point tries to cut off the nipples of her nurse/maid), yet he leaves her untreated perhaps as part of some "art" project (there are shades here similar to Lars von Trier's most recent art-house outrage "Antichrist"). Meanwhile, there is some kind of religious festival taking place in the local town. The younger townspeople are using the occasion for a drunken, naked bacchanal the saints would probably not approve of. The virginal teenage boys are doing their damnedest to get in the panties of the virginal teenage girls. A lonely young butcher gets so turned on staring at the breasts and asses of the local teen girls that he has to go graphically hump a side of beef. A bunch of younger kids are wandering around engaging in street fights. A prepubescent boy meets a slightly older pubescent boy who has been injured in a street fight, and takes the injured youth to the villa of the artist and the insane woman. Eventually, we learn why it is NOT a good idea to perform analingus (look that up in a dictionary if you need to)on an insane woman while her weirdo artist husband watches (not that most people WOULD do that. . .).
This movie does get pretty outrageous, but it is well made and definitely worth seeing if you're not too easily offended. I'm not exactly sure the point of all this religious imagery, animal imagery, and general human debauchery and degradation, but it's definitely all presented in an interesting manner. And it's definitely not boring.

Be warned this film does feature excrement eating, sex with animals, oh and a chicken has its head cut off. But it's all done with style. The film features a man that has sex with a pig, and this results in the pig having human/pig hybrids. The piglets love their mother more than him so he kills them by hanging them and the mother then kills herself. He them buries himself alive with her but resurrects himself, this leads on the excrement eating to which he becomes violently ill due to and the film ends on the actors hanging himself from a very high ladder, oddly enough. I have met and attended a screen talk with Thierry Zeno, the director and he is a very laid back and proud director. The film did shock/disturb me but it wasn't the on-screen imagery which did this, it was the surreal and odd soundtrack which is just brilliant

Now *this* is the film that separates the men from the boys. If it's in-yer-face sex and horror you want; then I suggest you bugger off now, because Jean Rollin has concocted something very very different... And are you man enough to take it?
Rollin's filmic obsession with vampires- and let's face it, with erotic young women- has never looked this beautiful. Like many films to come out of Europe, this eschews huge action and movement in favour of stillness and thought. It's beautiful to look at, and within the frame Rollin has trapped a whole other world- a vivid, colourful world of rich tones and contrasts, waif-like vampires and deep brown earth. Like some kind of comfortable dream on a hot Summer's evening, 'Two Orphan Vampires' slides from plot point to plot point at its own leisure. At times there's not a lot going on; but there's always something to look at.
Perhaps the most astonishing thing about the film, is the way in which Rollin makes the tiny budget work to his advantage. We meet a vampire queen, a ghoul and a werewolf. But we are only *told* this is what they are- they appear outwardly 'normal'... and although it's a cliche to say 'our imaginations do the rest', here it is so true. Late in the film there is a scene in which one of the characters explains some of her past; stuff that Hollywood would salivate over. Rollin has her hunched over a table and s-l-o-w-l-y tracks the camera towards her. No fuss, no noise, no elaborately staged flash-backs and set-pieces. Stillness. Quiet. And an otherworldliness that will leave you changed. It's like looking at a painting that illustrates a poem you strongly admire, and finding the artist has got it just 'right'. 'Two Orphan Vampires' is a tribute to the enduring presence of Jean Rollin- a writer/director of integrity, vision and wit.

"Valerie and Her Week of Wonders" is a wonderfully surreal and hallucinatory horror/fantasy tale made by Jaromil Jires.This poetic film looks like a curious mixture of "Alice in Wonderland" and "Nosferatu".The pubescent Valerie is awakened one day by a pasty-faced,Nosferatu-like vampire who steals her earrings(which,we later learn,are imbued with magical powers).She pursues him,but he manages to vanish into a crowd.She spots the vampire again later, feebly disguised behind a mouse-head mask,and points him out to her(alarmingly pale)grandmother.As it turns out,the earring thief has vampirized Valerie's grannie,along with much of the town,and furthermore has set up shop in the dark,cobwebby basement of Valerie's house!Matters aren't helped by the presence of a lecherous priest with an eye for Valerie,but things really come to a head when Val's young, pretty 'aunt' moves in and tries to take Valerie out of the picture.The aunt is in fact Val's vampirized grandmother looking to further the head vamp's nefarious aims.Luckily Valerie's one true love,a dashing young man,is there to help her escape her grandmother's clutches and defeat the vampires, which inspires a mass celebration among the townspeople,ending with them all surrounding Valerie as she climbs into an outdoor bed and goes to sleep.The film itself is loaded with incredibly dreamy atmosphere as it mixes perfectly fantasy with reality.The main actress Jaroslava Schallerova is stunningly beautiful.

Marco Ferreri was one of the most original directors in Italian cinema history, his movies contend with relationship of the modern man and the society where he lives, this relationship is often described as to be alienating and claustrophobic, however they're greatly ironic movies, "easy" to watch.
Another theme so dear to Ferreri is the woman, and La Carne (The Flesh) is another movie with a freaky female figure as protagonist. The women of Marco Ferreri are not normal human beings, they're more a sort of superwomen, they're always portrayed as dangerous beings for the man and often the man is himself a victim in the hands of theirs, concerning this I remember first Ferreri's great movies: L'ape Regina (The Conjugal Bed), La Donna Scimmia (The Ape Woman) and later La Dernière Femme (The Last Woman). Even if the women of Ferreri seem to be "superhuman" and "above" the common man I think that his standpoint about the women shouldn't be intended as a woman's celebration or as a sort of tribute to women, quite another thing: on closer inspection Ferreri's outlook about women reveals a strongly misogynist conception, I think so because those female portrays are so grotesque and so devoid of humanity that you'd have difficulty to recognize a real woman in them, in short the women of Marco Ferreri are parodies, for instance in "I Love You" we witness to an event of objectification of women, there the woman is replaced by a talking key-chain, that's Ferreri on the summit of his misogyny I think.
La Carne is not one of his best movies, however it should be seen if for no other reason than Francesca Dellera, she's absolutely amazing, let me be clear, she CAN'T act but she's a sort of living "visual effect" talking about sensuality and sex appeal, she'd be able to arouse a sort of "cannibal attraction" both in men and women and it's just a cannibal love what Paolo (Sergio Castellitto) will feel about her

Greenaway's visuals (which betray his origins as a painter in almost every gorgeously composed shot) are sumptuous. Wim Mertens score is mesmerizing. Add them to Brian Dennehy's towering performance as obsessed, betrayed, and ultimately dying American architect Stourley Kracklite and you have something very special. Kracklite is in Rome battling to put on an exhibition to his idol, 18th century French architect Etienne Louis Boulet. His young wife (Webb) betrays him, the natives scheme to undermine his exhibition and he begins to crumble physically like the ruins of the eternal city around him. The story, largely carried on Dennehy's massive shoulders, is almost incidental to the glorious, poetic footage of Rome. It is so movingly beautiful that, when I finally got around to visiting the city (a trip in no small part inspired by this film) the reality of the place couldn't compete. If you can, watch this on a big screen with the best possible suround-sound. If you can't, watch it anyway.

Brisseau is The French Haneke.Like the Austrian director,his characters are beyond any moral. Cremer portrays a scientist who is also a serial killer.He's got a disabled daughter whom he treats like a dog because "she's still a beast ,only the hard way can turn her into a human being". Both hold a grudge against the whole world -the love the girl feels for Pascal will be short-lived- and the father/killer seems to use expiatory victims.This is a bleak disturbing movie which was largely ignored during the eighties but which still retains a small cult following.
